K-5 Curriculum

K-5 Curriculum

At Xenia Community Schools, our elementary students learn and grow together with their teachers and classmates. The district follows Ohio’s learning standards for each core subject, with teachers personalizing learning for students and creating engaging activities that make learning memorable and help build a foundation of knowledge and skills that will set them up for future academic success.

Our students also benefit from learning opportunities that range from P.E. and digital literacy to art and music. These classes ensure that our students are well-rounded and have the opportunity to explore their creative side and express themselves in different ways.

On this page, you can:
  1. Explore our core curriculum by reviewing various learning platforms, apps, and software in use.
  2. Discover Ohio learning standards that apply to each subject at every grade level.
  3. Learn how social emotional learning (SEL) is integrated into curriculum. As a reminder, SEL activities encompass all the ways we help our students develop healthy identities, manage their emotions, feel and show empathy, establish positive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Learn more about SEL at Casel.org.
   4. Find additional resources to help your student learn and develop.

You can browse information by grade and subject using the tabs below.

    MAP® ASSESSMENTS
All XCS K-10 students complete Measures of Academic Progress (MAP®) assessments for Math and ELA three times throughout the year (Fall, Winter, Spring). In our elementary buildings, MAP® testing is used to show what your child knows and the next steps in learning.

    What are MAP® assessments?
These are computerized adaptive tests in which the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answered the previous question(s). Essentially, if a student answers correctly, the questions become more challenging. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. Remember that this means students are not expected to answer all questions correctly! Instead, MAP® assessments measure growth and learning over time in a way that is challenging but not overwhelming. Learn more about MAP® assessment

Families can also visit the NWEA MAP® Family Toolkit website or download the Family Guide to MAP Growth (PDF) to learn more.

    OHIO STATE TESTS
The State of Ohio requires all students in grades 3 through 8 to take standardized tests each year in language arts and mathematics. Students in grades 5 and 8 also take state tests in science. Learn more about OST.

    THIRD GRADE READING GUARANTEE
The Third Grade Reading Guarantee requires school districts to assess students' reading skills from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, and create individualized plans and provide intensive reading interventions as needed to ensure that all students are reading on grade level by the end of the third grade.
