Xenia High School Students Conduct Sweet Statistics Lab

Posted Date: 10/21/25 (5:00 PM)

Students in Mr. Collins’ College Credit Plus (CCP) Statistics class at Xenia High School recently completed a hands-on lab involving M&Ms. The goal was to calculate a confidence interval for the proportion of yellow M&Ms in a standard bag and compare it to the manufacturer's claimed percentage.

After analyzing six bags, students found an average of 23% yellow M&Ms—nearly double the expected 12.5%. They concluded that the difference could be due to the small sample size compared to the company’s overall production.

The lab is one of many real-world applications used in the CCP Statistics class to reinforce core concepts. Xenia High School offers several in-person CCP courses, allowing students to earn college credit while still in high school.

Mr. Collins said, “Many students struggle with Statistics in college, but this format allows for more face-to-face instruction and support.”

Experiences like this help students build critical thinking skills and apply their learning in practical ways. Xenia High School continues to provide innovative opportunities that prepare students for future academic and career success.
