Ready... Set... Career!

Posted Date: 8/28/25 (7:30 AM)

Students in our 8th grade Sports Science exploration class spent part of this week learning about what it takes to become an Athletic Trainer! While exploring the possibilities of this fun profession, students have been learning about typical job responsibilities, as well as appropriate first aid techniques such as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate).

After learning the basics and practicing in small groups, they let their inner competitors out in a mini-challenge to see who could wrap specific joints the fastest. With bragging rights on the line, students posted some great times — and solidified their skill-sets!

Over the course of the quarter, students in this class will explore this and other sports science careers, including: Physical Therapy, Performance Analysis, and Sports Nutrition.

What are "exploratories" at Warner?
Exploratory classes at Warner Middle School are courses that allow students to experience various subjects beyond the core curriculum! These can be short- or long-term learning opportunities that allow students to "try out" different subjects. Whether the classes last a quarter, a semester, or an entire year, students get the chance to explore topics of interest as they develop skills that will help them make a plan for high school and beyond.

For WMS students, these elective courses are part of their regular schedule, with options that vary by grade. Some exploratory classes lead directly into Career Pathways at Xenia High School, and are intended to help students decide if that might be the right path for them.

Current exploratory class options vary by grade, but can include: band, choir, theater, art, foreign language (Spanish), technology, health science, leadership & business, sports science, and media & design. Specific courses, such as Flight & Space, Robotics, and Medical Detectives, are taught using the rigorous, STEM-based curriculum of Project Lead the Way
