⚠️ Statewide Policy Update: Ohio attendance guidelines were updated beginning with the 2026–2027 school year to focus on total missed instructional time, making consistent daily routines more important than ever for our K-12 students.
These updated guidelines are required by state law following legislative updates passed by the Ohio General Assembly. All public school districts in Ohio are obligated to follow these updated statewide standards for tracking instructional time.

What Has Changed for the 2026–2027 School Year?
The updated state guidance* shifts the focus from simple truancy (unexcused absences) to accounting for total time away from the classroom.
- Every Absence Counts: Under the updated state framework, all missed time — whether excused, unexcused, or due to medical reasons — accumulates toward a student's total missed instructional hours.
- Redefining Chronic Absenteeism: A student is now classified as chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of the minimum required instructional hours across the school year.
- Hours and Minutes Matter: Absence calculations track total hours, not just full days. Leaving 30 minutes early for an appointment or arriving 20 minutes late adds up over the semester toward total missed time.
⚡️Pro Tip: Avoid scheduling non-urgent appointments during the school day to keep your student in good standing for attendance! Since every minute counts, taking time out of school for appointments, outside activities, or family vacations keeps your student from learning on pace with their classmates.

The goal of these state changes is early intervention — not punishment! If your family is navigating health challenges, transportation obstacles, or morning routine struggles, you do not have to handle it alone.
- Communicate Early: Notify your building principal or attendance office as soon as you anticipate a schedule disruption.
- Access District Resources: XCS offers support services, guidance counseling, and community partnerships to help eliminate attendance barriers before missed time adds up.
- Track the Hours: Keep doctor notes on file and schedule non-urgent appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.
